General paintings legend:

Depicted here is my personal dream, that shows a wedge tail eagle, which is home to many of our lands. In my dream the Eagle came to me and guided me through a strange land I did not recognise. On many occasions his guidance felt like the guidance of my Ancestors, which asked the spirit of this beautiful animal to guide me through something new.

Background depicts Neutrinos, which are known for their speed, which is faster than light and it is depicted so, because the strongest part of my dream was that whenever I felt in danger from the surroundings of this strange land, he came in the such a big hurry, that all around him stood still and even the fastest particles stood in amazement.

Shortly after this dream I went to explore bush, not far from where I live. As I was walking around the bush, I saw the Eagle which greeted me with his voice. I stood still and watched him; when I look down for a short time I saw something moving. Not far from me was a big Eastern Brown Snake, which was sunbathing and as I stood still, he just slowly moved away. I am sure, that if it would not be for the Eagle, I would have come across a very nasty surprise.

I do see the dream as a warning and education that I was honoured to receive from my Ancestors and Spirits, showing respect to them and to the Spirit of the Wedge Tail Eagle. I decided to honour him with my painting.

GOANNA, AUSTRALIAN SKIN SERIES 2

Painted and copyrighted by Danielle Burford in 2011, Acrylic on Canvas, 760 x 740mm

Original 3,700.00 AUD Art Reproduction starts at 35.00 AUD Greeting cards 5.00 AUD

General paintings legend:

Goanna is my totem animal. I had the honour to come across this amazing reptile, who posed for me. This painting is once again painted from the inspiration I gathered from nature, yet it is a little bit different. As I said the goanna has been Totem Animal of my people; its Spirit was watching over us for thousands of years and it was making sure our connection to our land will always stay in our hearts and will be calling us.

I decided to depict the cycle of this magnificent animal which is connected to the appearance. As you can see depicted here is the shedding skin of the Goanna, which is depicted with grey areas and the new skin emerging and displaying its beauty and novelty. The process is part of life, which is rebirth and death, and no matter the circumstance, death will come. Through the shedding skin, the basic and most important parts are still present and are forming a new skin for the animal. It reminds me that although our surroundings do change, our skin color may change with Summer, our bodies will fatten or become slimmer, the core of our being will stay within us and make us beautiful and strong in Spirit, our passion, love and respects to our culture, which will form an amazing new pattern. And although we, ourselves, can be seen as ’shedded skin’ and vanish into the Milky Way, it may be our children which will be reborn from our respects, love and passion to carry on the beauty of us and our people.

Once again, this is my personal introduction, but you may find another meaning in the facts, or in the image. The most important thing is that you will stop for a second and think about our connections to nature and our Ancestors: a connection to our lands which is honoured through this amazing Australian reptile.

General paintings legend:

I received my inspiration from nature. The Eastern Brown snake is one of the most dangerous snakes we need to be aware of, and although we should step back when we see them, there is so much beauty in them as nature painted these snakes with more than one pattern. The Spirit of the snake should never be forgotten as if we will be ignorant to them and their surroundings. We may get hurt. As I see it, creatures like this are reminding us that no matter what people think, no matter how we are calling ourselves ‘the most powerful species on this earth’, we are only visitors and guardians and should behave as such, or we will get reminders from creatures such as this beautiful snake, that the truth is hidden somewhere else.

Depicted here is the skin of Eastern brown snake which when placed flat, from top to the bottom of the snake, we will see amazing, almost mathematical patterns. My painting is to honour this connection and Spirit of the snake, so when he will come across our people or playing children, it would rather choose a different pathway as the reminder to those who are trying to destroy our lands.

General paintings legend:

This Painting came to me in a dream. Hanging on the wall, a god like white Kangaroo surrounded by wild mushrooms and walking spirits as sign of our land. The painting is full of great spirits from the presence and past and the white Kangaroo, which represents the diversity of nature and marks one of the iconic animals who live on our land.

Although my dream did not point me in a particular direction nor left me with a description or meaning, I do believe that it is sign of good things to come.

The kangaroo is enclosed by an array of white and brown pebbles. Their meaning (the pebbles) is also important, in that they describe the diversity of our true culture, no matter if the people united are short, dark or light. Like the pebbles, we stand next to each other as one, because they are coming from our mother land as we do.

General paintings legend:

Inspiration from nature has been, for thousands of years, important to First Nation peoples from around the world. Its signs, markings, designs and beauty inspired our Ancestors and their Elders’ dreams, which were designed by Spirits of our land. Creatures which were and are still living on the land, gave us the great honour of guarding our lands, and rewarded us where our custodianship was with good intent and will.

This artwork resembles pathways in life, particularly the many ‘not so certain’ roads we traverse. The pathways in this painting are connected in one, never ending nor starting.

Or maybe it is not a depiction of life journey’s, but more a vision of the coral, when looking on it through a microscope. Its pathways are resembling anything we would like to see, but most importantly its beautiful structure vary with each coral…just like our lives.

This painting is a reflection of my dreams. I often look above my head and admire stars, planets and all those sparkling tiny spots. Same as I wonder about the night sky, I also wonder about ocean. I have great respects to the ocean, its power and dangers. The ocean’s beauty came to me at later stage, when I moved to Coffs Harbour. This move inspired me to explore more about ocean life.

In my dream I was swimming in the deep blue water. My dream brought me fear at first as there was no land to stand on, nothing to hang on to - the “big blue” was as amazing as it was truly scary. Suddenly a dolphin came to me and guided me to amazing underwater gardens. Anemones and sea bed coral all around me. I was surprised how amazing life was, hidden below the crashing waves, and what diversity, beauty and resources were being preserved, many of which were an important source to our Ancestors along the coastlines.

Then suddenly, all went dark. Yet I was not scared as the dolphin still accompanied me. It was night. All had changed, with phosphorescent corals and anemones emerging. I then stumbled upon “Shell Way”, that reflected our Milky Way, built from thousands and thousands of glittering shell pieces and sand seeds. It was then, when I realised that our world is made from many smaller worlds which need our protection, and that the Spirits of creatures living in those worlds may not affect us in very direct way, yet they were part of our worlds and we have to listen to them as well. We are custodians not only of the land we stand on, but also of the land below the water ’ssurface and with the same passion, we have to guard and care for it, as we are connected to it.

General paintings legend:

Depicted here is an exact aerial view of part of the Snowy River in the Snowy Mountains of NSW. The top of the view displays a Rainbow Trout, which has been very important food source to our people. The x-ray display shows the skeletal structure of the fish, with its favorite food as its belly content. My people used to depict x-ray structures in order to introduce animal structures and the diet of animals.

This painting is once again a reflection of my mind, and I would like to encourage you all to sink inside and see whatever you feel is depicted. If you are asking what I see the answer is simple. The dots represent the snow and footprints of our Ancestors which were traveling through the valley - dot by dot, footprint after footprint. Some of the dots are prints of the animals, whilst other dots are snow flakes themselves. Can you tell which are which? Can you find the footsteps of your friends?
